A man accused of being involved in the honour killing of a young woman
has been remanded in custody following a court appearance.

Amir Abbass, 22, unemployed of no fixed address, was charged with
conspiracy to murder Banaz Mahmod and assisting an offender, during an
appearance at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court in south London.

Miss Mahmod disappeared in January last year and her decomposed body was
discovered buried in a suitcase in a garden in Handsworth, Birmingham,
three months later.

In July, her father Mahmod Mahmod, 54, and uncle Ari Mahmod, 51, were
jailed for life for her murder. They strangled her because they
disapproved of her relationship with her boyfriend

A third man Mohamad Hama, 30, was told he would spend at least 17 years
behind bars after admitting his part in her murder.

During their trial it emerged that Miss Mahmod realised her life was in
danger and even wrote a letter to police naming those she thought might
kill her.

She asked police for help four times but was not taken seriously.

In footage recorded by her boyfriend following an earlier attempt on her
life by her father in December 2005, she said she was really scared.

The film was played in court and helped convict her killers from beyond
the grave.

Abbass will next appear at the Old Bailey on January 25.
