A friend bought two toys from Gadget shop. With one, a battery operated
String Thing, the string broke within two minutes of getting it out of
the box. The second, a mini digital camera, refused to work at all.

Disappointment all round for the recipients.

As someone who works for one of the companies that supply them (but not
either of the crap products you mention, as it happens), the other side of
the case is that Gadget Shop have always tried to be at the cutting edge of
gadgetry and that comes with a significant downside.

The downside is that they, and we the middle-men, often get a finished
product when it arrives from the actual manufacturers that varies from the
original sample from which weve bought.

Easiest and most frequent thing to get wrong is the batteries - either not
there or lower grade than that which was paid for, but it is not unknown
for the makers to vary the colour of the item or substantial details of one
or more of the body moulding details so as to totally change the thing as
compared to how it appears on the box (which often comes from somewhere
else!).

Also, when these new products are sitting on the shelves in Hong Kong,
Taiwan or China (usually) they will have several versions of the same thing
side by side so that they can claim that the second version is same, but
not same when they want to be able to supply a VERY similar product into a
territory where Gadget Shop (for example) think they will be the exclusive
importer/retailer. There were many versions about of Billy Bass, the singing
fish, when that was a good selling line...

Anyway, the bottom line is that buying a brand new innovative electronic
gift thing is like buying the latest computer technology - fraught with
potential difficulties, unfortunately.
