There are various categories of walking.
1. Victorian, aka Pure or GOFW (Good Old Fashioned Walking): No
battery powered devices permitted. Watches must be
mechanical. Magnetic compasses allowed, but not electronic. Mechanical
barometric altimeters allowed. Mechanical pedometers and push-button
counters allowed. In other words, Victorian technology is
permitted. Clothes must not contain artificial fibres or plastics.
2. Standard: Battery powered devices (such as phones, GPS, radio,
etc.) permitted to be carried for use only in emergencies. Battery
powered watches may be used, as may electronic compass and
altimeter. In other words, you may use modern electronic substitutes
for Victorian devices, but modern electronic devices with no Victorian
mechanical counterparts are usable only in emergencies. Artificial
fibres and plastics in clothes allowed.
3. Artificial: Anything goes.
There is nothing unsporting per se. What is unsporting is to make
false claims, e.g., to claim to be a Pure walker while wearing trainers
and using an electronic watch.
